Amazon FBA removal options: return, dispose, liquidate or resell

Amazon FBA sellers holding excess inventory or customer returns have four main exits: ship units back, ask Amazon to dispose of or recycle them, submit eligible units to FBA Liquidations, or send removals to a resale partner. The best route depends on unit value, condition, current fees, timing and how much control you want over where products end up.

What Amazon's removal tools actually do

Amazon's Remove inventory overview describes three ways to create removals: one-off requests for return or disposal, automatic removals for unsellable and slow-moving units, and bulk removals by spreadsheet. A per-item fee applies by weight band. Amazon revises its fee tables, so check current figures in Seller Central rather than relying on an old spreadsheet.

Amazon says it typically processes removal orders within 10 to 14 business days, and holiday-season processing can take 30 days or more. Once a removal order is created, Amazon does not charge storage fees on those units while the order is processing, but the address on the order cannot be changed. Removals ship only to you, your warehouse, your supplier or your distributor, never to PO boxes or another fulfillment center, and non-transportable dangerous goods can only be disposed of.

The four routes compared

Return to your address

Returning stock keeps every option open: you can inspect, regrade, rebundle or relist it. The trade-off is that you pay the removal fee, receive the freight, and take on the labor and storage that follow. Large removals are consolidated on pallets, shipped by freight carrier and delivered only to a dock or similar facility.

Disposal or recycling

Disposal is the fastest way to stop thinking about a SKU, but it recovers nothing and ends the product's useful life. It fits units that cannot be resold, such as non-transportable dangerous goods. For anything that still works, it should be the last option rather than the default.

FBA Liquidations

Amazon routes eligible units to contracted liquidators, deducts a referral fee and a per-item processing fee, and pays you the net recovery value, which Amazon says should appear within 90 days. Amazon also notes that net recovery can be negative yet still beat disposal. Hazmat and recalled items are excluded, and among unfulfillable units only Customer Damaged, Carrier Damaged and Distributor Damaged reasons qualify. A confirmed liquidation order cannot be canceled.

A resale partner such as REMEX

With REMEX E-commerce Removal, you connect your seller account, set removal preferences and send removals to REMEX. REMEX receives the inventory first, inspects it, then resells qualified units through online and offline channels. For Amazon returned inventory, you receive 70% of the actual resale proceeds, not retail value, and REMEX keeps a 30% service fee, applied before any other agreed costs. Settlement terms are agreed before you connect.

How to choose among Amazon FBA removal options

Start with unit value. Low-value, heavy overstocks can cost more to remove than they resell for, while working electronics, branded goods and sealed returns usually justify a resale route. Next, check the reason code: units Amazon marks as Expired, Defective or Warehouse Damaged are not eligible for FBA Liquidations. Finally, consider product life. EPA ranks source reduction and reuse above recycling and disposal, so a route that gets usable goods to a new buyer is the more credible sustainability choice, provided the products are safe to sell.

Checklist before you create a removal order

  • Export the Recommended Removal report and unfulfillable inventory by SKU and reason code.
  • Check current removal, disposal and liquidation fees in Seller Central.
  • Take recalled, hazmat and expired units out of any resale plan.
  • Estimate realistic resale value per unit, not MSRP.
  • Confirm the receiving address and dock access, since the address cannot be changed later.
  • Close listings you do not want sold while removals are processing.
  • Decide who will inspect, regrade and resell what comes back.

FAQ

Is FBA Liquidations always better than disposal?

Not always. Amazon states that net recovery can be negative after fees. Compare the expected net with the disposal fee and with a resale route, SKU by SKU.

Does the 70% share apply to everything I send REMEX?

No. The 70/30 split applies to Amazon returned inventory and is based on actual resale proceeds, before other agreed costs. Terms for Walmart removal inventory are confirmed with you before you connect and do not inherit the Amazon figures.
