Walmart WFS excess inventory: when to remove and how to prepare
Share
Walmart WFS sellers should act on excess inventory before it passes 365 days in storage, because a long-term storage fee starts on day 366. Try pricing, listing and channel fixes first. If units still will not sell, plan the removal carefully: orders cannot be edited after submission, and storage fees continue until the removal completes.
Spot aged Walmart WFS excess inventory early
Walmart defines aged inventory as units stored in a WFS facility for longer than 365 days and applies the long-term storage fee from the 366th day after receipt. Aged units appear on the WFS Overview page, on the Inventory page under the Surplus and aged tab, and in the Inventory health report. In that report, the ATS 271-365 days column is your early warning, since those units are close to the fee. The ATS 366-450 days and ATS 450+ days columns are already aged.
Review the report on a fixed schedule and flag SKUs where current stock exceeds what you can realistically sell before day 366.
Try to sell through first
Walmart's Move aged inventory guide lists the in-platform levers. The Optimize panel offers pricing updates, listing quality improvements, Google Shopping campaigns and Multichannel Solutions, which lets WFS inventory fulfill orders from your other sales channels. Sponsored Search and review programs can help a listing that has good content but too little traffic. Selling through to end customers keeps products in their intended use, which is the best outcome for both margin and waste.
When removal is the right call
Removal makes sense when a SKU is discontinued, when you want to retire an item (Walmart requires its inventory to be removed first), or when the markdown needed to sell through costs more than recovering the units another way.
What the removal process involves
Removals are created on the Removal Orders page in Seller Center, where you choose to have inventory shipped back or disposed of. Both carry a per-unit fee listed in Walmart's WFS fees guide, so check the current rate before deciding. Walmart says it generally completes removals within 30 calendar days and consolidates shipments, choosing parcel or LTL/FTL freight at its discretion. Units may return in unbranded or Walmart-branded boxes if they were taken out of original packaging during receiving.
Preparation details that prevent problems
For freight removals, WFS contacts you to schedule a delivery appointment. If you do not confirm within 10 days of the first outreach, Walmart may dispose of the inventory at your expense, so the email and phone tied to the removal address must be actively monitored. Removal requests are also subject to resolution of any outstanding balance on your account.
Removal preparation checklist
- Pull the Inventory health report and list SKUs in the 271-365 day and aged columns.
- Record what you already tried: price changes, listing fixes, ads and Multichannel Solutions.
- Group items into as few removal orders as possible, as Walmart requests.
- Choose ship-back or disposal per SKU, reserving disposal for units that cannot be resold.
- Confirm the receiving address, dock access and a monitored contact before submitting.
- Track progress on the Removal Orders page and in the Returned to Seller report.
- Inspect deliveries promptly: damage and missing-unit disputes are due within 60 days of the financial deduction, non-delivery within 30 days.
