Sorting customer returns for resale: grading, testing, safety
Share
Sorting customer returns for resale starts with safety, then condition. Screen out recalled, hazardous and hygiene-sensitive items first, grade the rest into clear condition buckets, test what is worth testing, and document every unit. Well-sorted returns reach more buyers at better prices than mixed, untested excess inventory, and more products stay in use.
Step 1: Safety screen before anything else
The CPSC states that it is illegal to sell a recalled consumer product, and that its rules apply to anyone who sells or resells, online or in person. Check cpsc.gov/recalls by brand and model before a returned item enters any resale stream. Amazon likewise excludes recalled and hazmat items from FBA Liquidations.
Hygiene-sensitive products need their own rule. FDA warns that cosmetics resold online may be past their shelf life, already used, diluted or tampered with. Keep opened cosmetics, personal care items and anything with a broken safety seal out of resale unless the manufacturer has a defined process for them.
Step 2: Grade into clear condition buckets
Buyers price on condition, so write definitions that anyone on your team would apply the same way.
New, sealed
Original packaging intact and never opened. Often the highest-value grade, subject to your channel restrictions.
Open box, complete
Opened but unused, with all accessories, manuals and parts present. Note any packaging damage.
Used or cosmetic wear, tested working
Shows wear or marks but passed a functional test. Record what was tested.
Untested
Condition unknown. Buyers price this grade to cover their own testing and failure risk.
Defective or for parts
Failed testing or visibly broken. Sell it clearly labeled for repair or parts, or send it to recycling.
Step 3: Test what pays to test
Testing costs labor, so focus on categories where a verified working unit is worth clearly more than an untested one: electronics, small appliances, tools and branded accessories. A basic test sheet covers power-on, core functions, included accessories, model or serial number, and visible damage. For devices that store personal data, confirm a factory reset before resale. For lower-value goods, a visual check and accessory count is often enough.
Step 4: Document and batch
Record SKU, grade, test result and quantity per unit or carton, and keep photos of representative units. Group inventory by grade and category instead of mixing conditions, so a buyer can price each group on its own. If returns come back from a marketplace fulfillment center, inspect them promptly. Walmart, for example, sets 30 to 60 day windows for disputes about damaged, missing or undelivered removal units.
Returns sorting checklist
- Check every brand and model against cpsc.gov/recalls.
- Separate hazmat, battery-damaged and recalled units for proper handling.
- Pull opened cosmetics and personal care items from resale.
- Apply written grade definitions consistently.
- Test higher-value categories and wipe personal data.
- Photograph representative units for each grade.
- Batch by grade and category with accurate counts.
How REMEX handles returns
Marketplace sellers can send Amazon or Walmart removal inventory through REMEX E-commerce Removal: REMEX receives the units first, inspects them and resells qualified items. For Amazon returned inventory you receive 70% of actual resale proceeds and REMEX keeps a 30% service fee, applied before any other agreed costs. Walmart terms are confirmed before you connect. Brands and retailers holding returns in their own warehouse follow a different path: submit, review, buyer matching and sale, settlement, then pickup. Our FBA removal options guide compares the marketplace routes.
FAQ
Should I sell returns untested?
You can, but buyers will price in their testing cost and failure risk. Testing usually pays only where a working unit is worth clearly more.
Can opened cosmetics be resold?
Treat them as not for resale. FDA notes resold cosmetics may be used, diluted or tampered with, so keep them out of resale streams.
